2010-11 College Football Bowl Pool Spreadsheet

Looking for the 2011-12 files? Go here.

Okay, folks. You've waited long enough. Here's this year's college football bowl pool sheet:

2010-11 Bowl Pool Summary Sheet

And here's the individual picks sheet you can pass around to those participating in your pool to copy-paste their picks back into the Summary sheet file (just remember, Copy --> Paste Special... --> Values is your friend):

2010-11 Bowl Pool Individual Picks Entry Sheet

As always, if you find any issues, please let me know. If you've got a cool idea for an enhancement, do the same.

Enjoy,

Thanks! Im starting a pool at my work and this is exactly what I need. All the extra stuff you put in there looks awesome. Good job

Very nice, thanks. how do you import the picks to the main sheet?

Excel_Geek said...

I didn't build an automated importer. You'll have to copy --> paste special... --> special those columns from the Picks sheet into the Summary sheet.

I've done my own excel confidence pool for the past several years, and I am very impressed by yours. I do have a suggestion for an enhancement if I may. One thing that I've always wanted to implement in mine was a way to show each participants odds/probability of winning, automatically recaculating when each game is updated.

It doesn't take much time to figure out what each person's odds are when only 5 games or less remain (pen and paper with 32 outcomes), but anything more takes too long as it's exponentially more complex. And since we are dealing with confidences points, those need to be factored in as well.

Not being an excel expert by any means, has this been considered or suggested, and could it be done?

Thanks in advance!

Love your spreadsheet. It's so in depth it's crazy... Only thing I don't see is some type of condensed leaderboard for game wins. But maybe I'm just not using it right... We don't do a confidence pool we just do an outright wins pool so I'm trying to make it show me a leaderboard for simply who has the most wins but I'm not sure if that's possible with how it's set up...

Hi,

I was just wondering about column I or the "Pick" column for the 2010-11 pool entry form. One of the items listed in the drop down is "vs". Can or should this be removed to only reveal the teams?

Thanks.

Excel_Geek said...

Casey, you could remove the data validation on the confidence points columns (unprotect the sheet first, there's no password). Then just use a confidence of "1" for every game.

Excel_Geek said...

Todd C.,

Yes, just a minor oversight on my part to leave the data validation having the "vs." choice in it. Feel free to modify as you wish.

David,

What you're asking for has always been the grand dream for anyone's pool sheet. The problem is the actual amount of computing power required to calculate all of the iterations of now 35 games. That's 2^35 iterations x 40 possible sets of picks. I'm still noodling how to handle this, as i doubt i can do it inside of Excel...it's going to require a database application of some kind. I'd love to hear any ideas you have for doing this.

I have a question. If I only have 20 participants the chart still goes to the max participants you have and the font is so small. How do I change it to only do the chart for my 20 participants? The source data, data range says it is too complex to show so I do not know how to edit it.

Thank you thank you thank you for doing this! Saves the world's worst typist (me) a lot of time. Question: I sent my saved, slightly revised version of your spreadsheet to my uncle Paul to get his picks. Also sent him a pdf version. Scanned both attachments three times with avg, malaware, etc and they came up clean. He says the attachments trashed his computer. Browser windows kept opening, and he lost all his passwords. Any ideas as to why this would happen? (I think he has a virus.) And why is Uncle Paul being such a a**hole about it? Like I meant to trash his computer!

Ginny,

I feel pretty confident in saying that my files are not the cause of Uncle Paul's computer problems. Sounds like a wreck.

Your spreadsheet is completely clean. I think Paul's computer has some sort of infection and downloading any kind of files must make it worse. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the spreadsheet. It really helped.

Ginny, I suggest he take his computer to Geek Squad or another service provider to have his machine cleaned up. Sounds worth the money to me.

I have the same question as James. I have 20 participants. How do I get rid of the remaining 20 participants so when I view the group charts etc. the font isn't microscopic? Love this sheet every year! Thanks!

Todd C said...

Hello,

I just wanted to let everyone know that if you have more than 20 participants you will need to adjust a formula in the summary spreadsheet on the "individual charts" tab, column I. It is currently referencing blank cells from the "picks" tab (A53 and so on).

I have 44 participants in my pool. How do I add 4 more?

Unknown said...

I need to add participants as well. If you could let us in on how to do this correctly that'd be great. Thanks for the sheet, it's perfect.

Excel_Geek said...

Lot's and lots of requests to add more participants. This is not exactly a straightforward task. If you can figure it out, go for it. If not, I'd suggest having multiple copies of the sheet for your overflow. Not ideal, I realize. But as soon as I make it for 50 participants, someone will want 55, etc. I'm looking at a scalable longer term solution for next year.

I have used this spreadsheet for the past two years and wanted to thank you for taking the time to get it going. This yr I was going to have people simply do it themselves on ESPN but after the games started up, I quickly realized there is absolutely no comparison to your spreadsheet. Every time I use it I let people know where I got the spreadsheet from so hopefully you will pick up some more followers of the site. Thanks again for all you do!

any way that it will do point spreads along with over/under.

E.G> TCU -1.5 over 58.5
WISC+1.5 under 58.5
using drop down boxes for each.
my current spreadsheet program cant link all the enrty sheets to the master sheets and have them update from there. Currently i update them one by one. maybe i can send you this spreadsheet and you can work your magic.? My public email is chippermagoo112@hotmail.com. Do you work on other spreadsheets or only create your own?

is it possible to add an over/under column to the picks summary sheet?

Do you also work on other bowl pool formats? Can send you the format i currently use but is far simpler, however i do find yours to be much more appealing and satisfiying to the stat trackers in our leagues. maybe it can be incorporated into a hybrid format sheet?
Kindest Regards
William

I used your amazing spreadsheet last year with a few modifications for a straight pickem style. My problem now is the people in the office want invite their friends. I have tried to figure out how to expand beyond the 40 entries currently allowed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

OUTSTANDING! I don't need more participants :). I am going to add a point spread column, which will definitely compound the complexity of ranking. Thanks again!!!!
