2014-15 NFL Pick 'Em Pool

For those of you who've been eagerly anticipating this year's rendition of my NFL Pick 'Em Pool, it's ready to roll!

I've baked in a few notable enhancements:

  • I've rearranged some things to make it easier to copy-paste from the picks area of the sheet or to select large ranges and delete to clear out picks. Before I had some hidden and protected columns in between each of the game columns that made this not possible.
  • I added in conditional formatting that automatically formats the top Home and Visitor team cells to match the team colors of the teams. Snazzy! I got this idea from a past user of my spreadsheet who'd implemented the color schemes himself, though not with the conditional formatting.
  • I've also included a companion worksheet to the one that the pool administrators will use -- one that participants can simply pick the week, and then make their picks, and then send them to the administrator, who can now copy and paste them easily into the "master" sheet.
Here are links to the two files:

Pool Administrator "Master" sheet

Pool Participant "Weekly Picks" sheet

Enjoy everyone!

Thanks for uploading this! Looks good so far, still seems to have the issue of when copying and pasting into an email the pasting doesn't work as well.

The weekly picks sheet will make it easier though to have people fill that out and send it over.

Mike A, why do you need to copy-paste something into an email?

How can I add more participants? I have a LARGE (almost 200 people pool!).

Excel_Geek said...

Cora, it's not terribly straightforward. if I get a chance, i'll bump it up to 200 participants and repost it. Otherwise, you can try yourself. Simply unprotect all of the sheets and the workbook, do some copy pasting. Unhide a hidden sheet that does the cumulative points calculations and do some copy pasting. Then rehide that sheet, reprotect all the other sheets and reprotect the workbook. (I didn't password protect any of this.)

Hi,

I went through and updated some mock situations and when I used the Sort By Total Points function seemed broken and wasn't totaling properly.

Thanks for posting this sheet though!

AMAZING!! love the colors!! i copied my results pages(i have a huge grid for tracking the winners and how many weeks won and games won then add the playoffs. I'll send you my sheet in case you want to see what i did with the results page. The weekly sheet the perfect idea. Just send that sheet out once and the players can just keep using the same sheet each week with no extra tabs and all that!!!

Thanks for the spreadsheet, it's awesome. I wanted to ask if there is any way to assign a different point value for certain games. A value of 6 for a win in a certain game or minus 3 for a loss in the same game. Just asking but great spreadsheet.

Great job on the spreadsheet! I have one question, is there any way to give a different point value on lets say two games while the others stay at 1 point each? Thank you and awesome job!

In reference to what Cora has asked above would you please add an additional 250+ participants b/c that is what is in my pool. Thanks a bunch. Great spreadsheet!

It appears the first participant's values don't add up, nor is the conditional formatting working for those cells associated with.

Used this last year and again this year. Truly a huge time saver. I am not using the current one but maybe next year. What do you do if a game is a tie like today with Carolina and Cincinnati(week 6). Thanks

Excel_Geek said...

Good question @BianchiGreen. I suppose you award no points. Just don't specify a winner. That's what I'm doing in my pool.

Thanks a lot men!

For some reason the last tab isn't populating the scores correct. Says way less points still available then what we really have.... Any thoughts? Spreadsheet is awesome though! Such a time saver!

Anonymous,

You'll have to provide a bit more info if you'd like me to help figure out the issue where the last tab doesn't seem to be correct. maybe you can email me the file you're using and I can see if something was broken? [ e hun ze ker @ g ma il . com]

Hi. Love love love the sheet!
I did a mock test as well and it appears when you click "Sort by total points" it puts a "0" instead of the actual total points for the leader.
Just seeing if there a way to adjust this? Thoughts??

Excel_Geek said...

Hold tight, folks. I'll have a new sheet for 15-16 out soon. I'll expand it to 250 participants and fix the sorting issues that people have reported.

Hi! Awesome that you're getting this ready. Quick question dude:

We also run a pickem league where each week's winners are determined by not the team who wins, but whethe they cover the spread also! Would you be able to add a couple of town which include the line items for: final score and spread? I'm currently trying to find source code which will dynamically allow me to pull score data and the conditional formats can then do the trick for applying the already entered spread (eg +3, -7 etc).

Would love your input!

Excel_Geek said...

@Mo, I've had on the backlog for this spreadsheet the concept of building in support for spreads, but I don't know if i'll get to it for this season or not. If I do, you'll hear about it.

What's the best way to contact you directly? Cheers!

@Mo, my name is Eric Hunzeker. I use my first initial and last name for my Gmail email address.

Can you do a confidence entry for each game? 1-10 or 1-16 with 10 and 16 being the most likely to win and 1 being the least.

Excel_Geek said...

@Jeff Durlauf, not currently. That's a feature I will consider adding in the future, though.

Just wondering when this seasons files will be available? Excited to give your spreadsheet a try!

Excel Geek why are you planning to release the NFL Excel spread sheet for this upcoming season?

Alex H said...

Will you be posting your 2015-2016 NFL Pick'em Pool soon?

No 2016 sheet coming out??? :(

Mike A said...

Hi Eric,

Do you have a 2015 - 2016 sheet? I will pay for it... but just want to make sure you have one for this year before i pay!

Mike

Ok, everyone! I hear you! I just bit off a touch more than I could chew in implementing some long requested new features: more participants (up to 300 now), support for picking vs. the spreads, support for confidence points two different way, and several other changes. It was actually quite involved to do. I'll be posting a link to the new 2015-16 file in just a few minutes. Sorry to keep you on the edge of your seats. ;)
